I am Stacy Harrison, an employee of the Darlington County School District.  Freedom writer, Manny Scott, was the guest speaker at the district's convocation.  Mr. Scott wanted to reach out to students who struggle in school like he did so he became a motivational speaker.  The main point of his speeches is that we as educators should do whatever it takes to ensure that all of our students learn and can succeed beyond our classrooms.  We have to take into consideration what our students backgrounds are and do whatever it takes to reach them.  Some of them may not have support at home, may lack proper nourishment, etc.  Therefore, he suggests that we be the exception in the their lives.

During one speech a teacher made a comment that you can't teach a child who doesn't want to learn.  Another teacher agreed by saying, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink."  To that yet another teacher said, "You can't make the horse drink, but if you give him some salt he will want a drink of water."  In other words, we have to find out what our students our interested in, as well as what it takes to make them want to learn.

I enjoyed Manny Scott's speech and decided to create a logo related to it.  I included the phrase be the exception and an image of salt that would help me remember some of the important points he made that day.  I chose a background and font colors that helped tie everything together.
