Standard 3

(Learning Environments): Candidates facilitate learning by creating, using, evaluating, and managing effective learning environments.

Artifact #1: EDET 735 Final Project

Context & Conditions -- The final project for this class consisted of research on dyslexia. A PowerPoint presentation provided information on the topic. Jing was used to create a screencast of a website that simulates what reading is like for dyslexics.

Scope -- The artifact was created as a reference on a topic related to diverse populations. Resources were also provided including videos and information on various types of Assistive Technology.

Role -- This was an independent assignment in which I created everything and served as instructional designer.

Instructional Design -- This artifact reflects all elements of the ADDIE model. These phases of ADDIE can also be applied to the MRK model. The need for a job aid at my school was analyzed. It was then designed, developed, and implemented. The curriculum coordinator and I evaluated the infographic before the narration video was created.

Performance Indicator(s) --

  • Creating -- Candidates create instructional design products based on learning principles and research-based best practices.

Research was conducted on dyslexia. Resources were found that could supplement the presentation of information, as well as those that would best benefit dyslexic students.

  • Using -- Candidates make professionally sound decisions in selecting appropriate processes and resources to provide optimal conditions for learning based on principles, theories, and effective practices.

A variety of resources where provided that would help reduce barriers to learning. Information was also presented in a format that would help educators obtain a better understanding of what dyslexia is and how it affects students.

Diversity of Learners -- Candidates foster a learning community that empowers learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.

The entire assignment was geared at reducing barriers to learning for diverse populations, particularly individuals with dyslexia. Accessibility was also considered in the creation of the web pages and screencast.

Reflection -- I chose dyslexia as a topic because from the course readings I realized that there is a lot I do not know about it and other learning disabilities. I discovered an article that addressed what students want teachers to know. It was helpful to me and I think many more educators can benefit from reading it. Likewise, the simulation will help educators see things from a dyslexic student's point of view.

Artifact #2: EDET 793 Job Aid

Context & Conditions -- EDET 793: Advanced Instructional Design and Development is being taken during the current term. The infographic for the job aid was created using piktochart.com. Draw.io was used to create the flow chart and Microsoft PowerPoint was used to add the arrows to the images. Screencasts were done using Jing and Quick Time Player. The video was uploaded to YouTube.

Scope -- The artifact was developed to provide instructions for the students at my school on how to login to Epic!

Role -- I designed and developed the job aid in its entirety.

  • Creating - Candidates create instructional design products based on learning principles and research-based best practices.

The artifact was created based on the ADDIE model.

  • Using - Candidates make professionally sound decisions in selecting appropriate processes and resources to provide optimal conditions for learning based on principles, theories, and effective practices.

Screenshots, arrows, flow charts, etc. were used to make the job aid simple and easy to read so that my elementary school students could understand and follow the steps.

  • Managing - Candidates establish mechanisms for maintaining the technology infrastructure to improve learning and performance.

The job aid will be used to help students login in to the Epic! app on their iPads. Access to Epic! will help improve the students' reading levels and help them improve in other ways academically.

  • Ethics - Candidates foster a learning environment in which ethics guide practice that promotes health, safety, best practice, and respect for copyright, Fair Use, and appropriate open access to resources.

The resources used were cited to give credit to the owners and creators.

Reflection -- The creation of the infographic was not difficult, yet it was a bit time consuming. The only issues I had was with the narration video from Jing to screencast.com and accessing it later. For example, the video would upload and I could see the video in Jing at at screencast.com. However, for some reason the video disappeared and the link no longer worked once I logged out of the website and exited Jing.
